True Life

Just in case anyone thinks that things are going perfectly around here, we’ve gotten the hang of this thing called parenting, and we have the most easygoing baby ever, allow me to enlighten you for a few moments…

Instead of looking like this

Or, this…

Lately, our days have usually looked more like this

Brooklyn has decided in the past week or so that she wants to be held all the time. She doesn’t want to sit in her bouncer or swing, and she doesn’t want to sit in her Boppy. She cries when we burp her. She cries when we change her diaper. She cries when she eats. Then, she refuses to eat, and she cries about that too.

Now, this presents a problem when you are trying to get anything done other than holding a baby all day. (And you have to hold her a certain way or she still cries.). It’s especially a problem for a sleep-deprived mom who has been sick for the past several weeks (with a cold, and just recently, mastitis….fun, fun!). That equals less patience than normal, which wasn’t much to begin with.

Enter yesterday morning.

Brooklyn was ready to eat around 8 AM, so I got up to feed her. We sat in the glider in her nursery, and she nursed for a few minutes before getting choked (which is common), screaming, fussing, and deciding she was done. No more breakfast. I tried to burp her, which sometimes means she’ll eat some more, but this time it only made her cry more. I laid her back down on the Boppy pillow in my lap, and here came the spit up. All over her and all over the Boppy. Then, immediately after that, I hear the sound of a humongous diaper explosion. It was so bad that it exploded out of the diaper and onto her and the towel in my lap. (So, I guess she had a reason to be upset…I would be too!). Anyway, I took her over to the changing table and got her cleaned up. This also made her mad. I tried to clean up the stuff that had gotten dirty (the Boppy, towel, and burp cloth), but she kept crying. She wanted to be picked up.

So, I picked her up and carried her around for a few minutes. I got her to quit crying, so I thought I would lay her down so that I could fix a bowl of cereal for breakfast. (Lately, I’ve been starving all the time!). I barely got into the kitchen before she started crying again. So, I rushed to get my cereal and bring it back to the couch in the living room. I set it on the end table and picked Brooklyn up again. I carried her around for a few more minutes to calm her down before we sat down on the couch with her up against my chest. The cereal was soggy by this point, but that’s ok. At least, it was edible. I picked up the bowl and started to eat when I realized that milk had leaked out of the bowl onto the end table. So, holding the bowl in one hand, I tried to clean up the spilled milk with a paper towel in my other hand. Unfortunately, holding the bowl (that was STILL full of milk) right over Brooklyn’s head while trying to clean up the spill on the table was not my best idea. I must not have been holding the bowl level because the next thing I knew, MORE milk was spilling out of the bowl…onto Brooklyn, me, and the couch.

By this point, we were both crying, I was still starving, the cats were hiding, and the cereal was still getting soggy. Whew! It was not our best start to a day ever. Moral of the story…eat muffins for breakfast instead. Haha :)

I guess some mornings will just be fun like that, but hopefully not too many of them! Brooklyn, at least you keep life interesting :)

Wish I had some wonderful words of wisdom to help get Miss B happy and contented. I guess her eating and digestive issues haven’t quite figured themselves out yet. I can see why Felix and Gabby are steering clear of the action. I would guess Rae Rae will be heading up that way soon. Hang in there.
