Brooklyn: 1 Month Old

1 month old!

I think this has been the shortest AND longest month of my life. Honestly, I’ve never experienced something quite so rewarding and frustrating all at the same time like being a mom. To say that we are all still adjusting would be an understatement. Some days I feel like I’m doing things right…those are the days that Brooklyn is happy, eating well, and sleeping well. Other days are quite the opposite…when I feel like I couldn’t possibly be worse at this.   I think things will improve with time (and sleep!), but this is how I feel for now. Up and down.

Here are some things I want to remember about Brooklyn at 1 month old:

  • Eating: She eats usually every 3 to 4 hours. Some days, she nurses like a champ, and other days are a real struggle. Choking, crying, frustration, etc. Mostly, my “overabundant supply” is what is causing the problems. Hopefully, that will level out before too long. I never thought having too much milk could be a problem, but it definitely can.
  • Sleeping: She is still sleeping a lot during the day in between eating. Usually, she is awake (and fussing) for several hours in the evening. Sometimes, she’ll sleep in her crib at night, but never before 12 AM to 1 AM. Some nights, she won’t sleep in her crib at all, so she sleeps with us instead. She usually wakes up to eat every 3 to 4 hours at night also.
  • Brooklyn loves to grunt in her sleep! I guess this is preferable to crying, although it’s not very lady-like :) She also likes to sleep with her arms up by her head.
  • She loves her swing and bouncer seat most of the time. One of her favorite places to be, though, is propped up in her Boppy pillow. She also loves it when we “wear” her in the Moby wrap. That’s one way to put her straight to sleep!
  • Brooklyn enjoys getting a bath too! She doesn’t usually cry at all until it’s time to get out of the warm water and be rubbed with lotion and get dressed again.
  • She is really working on those neck muscles. She is getting pretty good at lifting her head up for short periods of time. Just this morning, she was lying back in her Boppy, and she lifted her head all the way up like she was trying to sit up!
  • She occasionally smiles in her sleep and while awake too, but most of the time, she’s got a very serious look on her face. She must be thinking about important baby stuff!
  • Newborn size clothes are just now getting snug on her. Some 0-3 month clothes are fitting also. For the first week or two, nothing fit very well! Size 1 diapers are finally fitting well also. I’m not sure how much she weighs now, but she’s definitely gaining weight! I would guess that she’s close to 9 lbs…maybe more than that. She doesn’t go back to the pediatrician for another check up until she’s two months old, so we’ll see how big she is then for sure!

Here are some pictures of B at one month…

We love you B! Can’t wait to see what month #2 has in store!! :)

Can’t believe my little “B” is one month old. How time flies!! You are Travis are doing a very good job. Don’t be discouraged. She is doing great — and definitely growing. Love all the “one-month” pictures.

“Rae-Rae”

Brooklyn is gorgeous!

I had/have the same problem with an over abundant milk supply… And a very fast letdown. Poor Sally gets hit in the face a lot. TMI? Watching her struggle to eat was so frustrating. But at two months she is finally able to handle it and doesn’t gulp and choke like she used to, so there is an end to the frustration for you and B! Also, I’m sure you know these things, but just in case, these are some tips from my doc that really helped: lean back when nursing and only nurse from one side each feeding. That second tip also helped Sal get the hind milk.

You probably knew both those things, but they made a big difference for me. It’s crazy our girls are just about a month different from each other. I can tell you that a lot of my struggles at one month have since ironed themselves out. It’s still hard, but much more manageable! Also, I think the over abundant supply has helped with weight loss, so that’s a plus :) :)

I love reading your thoughts about being a mom. They are so honest and well said!

It is SO nice to know someone who’s been through the same thing, Joanna! Glad things are going better for you and Sally now. I hope we’ll see an improvement in the next few weeks. Thanks for the tips! We are actually doing both of those things already (nursing on one side at a time and leaning back). It seems like the thing that helps the most is nursing when she is still semi-asleep. She doesn’t get as frantic and suck and swallow quite as hard. I never thought about having too much milk being what has helped me lose the baby weight, but I bet you’re right! Definitely a plus :) Hope y’all are doing well!!

Can’t wait to hold that sweet little doll baby. Maybe I could rent myself out from midnight-six for a month???? xxooo

We would SO hire you, Aunt Gale! We’ve even got a spare bedroom for you, although you’d probably have to fight Rae-Rae for it!

I can’t believe it is one month. Time is flying. I need to get up there and hold this cutie. Glad things are slowly getting more manageable. Talk about time passing fast. It seems to speed up. I like Gale’s offer.

Give Brooklyn a big kiss for me.

Grandpa

She is precious! I’m glad you are recording your memories of Brooklyn as she grows. Wish I had done that with my boys. I think this is what Jesus’ mother Mary did: “But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart” (Luke 2:19). Someday when Brooklyn is all grown up, you will really enjoy re-living these sweet days as you read your journal.

Thanks Mrs. Kim! I’ve always liked to write, so blogging is just natural for me I guess. Plus, I love taking pictures, and now I have a cute subject for them :) I already like going back and reading my old posts, so I’m sure that will still be the case years down the road!
