Abigail Brooklyn Mother's Day Savannah spring

First Half of May 2021

Looking back through my pictures from May, it was a crazy, jam-packed month. I am going to split up my recaps into two posts so that they aren’t too much of a novel ;) This post will cover what we were up to from May 1st-16th.

Savannah’s soccer team played at 10 AM on May 1st. They only had 4 girls (2 were at ballet), so they all had to play the whole game…

Savannah played great! She scored 3 goals today!! She played so hard and did a great job dribbling and passing. She didn’t seem afraid to get in there and kick the ball away from the other team. They don’t keep score at this age, but I’m pretty sure the Mighty Mermaids won about 6-2 or so. They’ve won most of their games this season! So proud of Savannah.

Cici, Alisha, and her boys came to watch, and Savannah loved having an extra loud cheering section :)

Brooklyn played at 1:30 this afternoon. This was the closest game they’ve played this season…they lost 4-1 but the other team never scored after the first half. Brooklyn seemed tired out there when she was playing defense and striker, but she played goalie the whole 2nd half and did a great job.

She even dove to make a save…we were so proud of her effort! The other team never scored while she was goalie today. She had fun and enjoyed having her cousins, aunt, and Cici there to watch!

Brooklyn was especially excited to go to Avery’s house after the game to swim for a little while. She was looking forward to that all day!

While Brooklyn was off swimming, Abigail was at home snoozing on the couch ;) It’s hard work to be a little spectator!

Cici made a yummy dessert to celebrate Savannah’s birthday the next day at lunch :)

She got a karaoke microphone from one of her classmates from school who couldn’t come to her party, but mailed us a gift later. We tested it out by singing along to Disney songs, of course ;)

May 3rd was the start of Teacher Appreciation week at school. The PTA had suggested activities each day for ways to make your teacher feel appreciated. Monday was “bring your teacher a flower”. Savannah picked these flowers out at the grocery store for Mrs. Curry! Brooklyn went the creative route and drew Mrs. Borys a picture of a bouquet ;)

On May 4th, the girls got out of school early because of the forecast for severe weather in our area. It never got bad where we live, but the girls enjoyed the extra playtime in the afternoon.

Thankfully, Mrs. Borys’ class still had time to celebrate Joke Day for the letter “J” before school let out early. Each child got a chance to tell their favorite joke to the class :)

They were studying deserts this week at school. I liked Brooklyn’s cactus picture.

May 5th was Kindness Day for the letter “K”. The kids did random acts of kindness throughout the school day, including writing a kind note to a friend.

I didn’t take any great pictures, but Sarah, Chloe, Alisha, Luke, and Barrett all came over to hang out for a little while on the morning of May 6th. Abigail enjoyed having some playmates, and I enjoyed the friend time too.

It’s way more fun to write your spelling words in shaving cream than it is to write them with a pencil!

On May 7th, Abigail and I met up with some other moms and kids from church for a playdate at the Creekwood playground. Amanda and Leon were going to be moving to California soon, and we wanted to get the kids together to play one more time before they moved.

Abigail was acting kind of funny and didn’t want to play with the other kids at first, but she eventually warmed up. I liked this picture of her and Collins sliding!

She is definitely not a climber compared to the others!

We really enjoyed the morning and the beautiful weather.

Paw and Rae Rae came up for the girls’ soccer games on May 8th. Brooklyn got her face painted that morning before Savannah’s game. Avery’s mom offered, and Brooklyn happily accepted :)

Savannah’s game was first at 11 AM. They played a team that they played earlier in the season. It was a close match…I think the Mighty Mermaids may have won 6-5. Savannah scored at least one goal, and I think she forced another own goal. She played great and ran so hard! She had a couple of breakaways and could have scored another goal or two.

So proud of her effort!

Brooklyn’s game started at 12 pm, so she and Travis had to leave Savannah’s game early. The rest of us got to her game with a minute or two left in the 1st quarter. Brooklyn played striker this game for 3 quarters and sat out 1 quarter. This was another game where the other team was much better, so the game wasn’t even close. Brooklyn says they lost 11-1. I lost count of the goals! ;)

Brooklyn played hard and ran as hard as she could. She made some good passes and did her best. We were proud of her effort too! I think she is more of a natural defender than a striker…she tends to want to get back and play defense even when playing striker, so she ends up running up and down the field more than she probably should. But she is having fun, so that’s all that matters!

Paw entertained Abigail on the sideline during the game, and I was happy to see Savannah passing the ball with Madi’s little sister, Ellie, who is also in 1st grade but at a different school. Ellie also plays 7U soccer, so they have a common interest. After the game, we picked up a late lunch from Chick-fil-a and took it back to our house to eat with Paw and Rae Rae. We gave Rae Rae our Mother’s Day card, and then they left to go back to the lake. It was a fun day!

One of Brooklyn’s favorite book series is called Puppy Place, and she wanted to write a letter to the author, Ellen Miles. I thought her letter was so cute! We found her address on her website and put the letter in the mail, hoping to get a response back at some point. (Sidenote: We did…but not for a while!).

I had a wonderful Mother’s Day this year! The girls both made me very sweet things at school for Mother’s Day. Mrs. Curry told me that Savannah “took so much time with her Mother’s Day book. I knew you were absolutely going to love it. Her heart for you is definitely all over it from cover to cover.” So sweet!

Travis and Tyler cooked peppered shrimp alfredo and made strawberry spinach salad, and Tyler made tiramisu for dessert. Everything was so good that we told Tyler he’d earned himself the job every Sunday…haha. We enjoyed lunch, and then the girls had more things planned for the afternoon when we got home. Brooklyn made me a treasure hunt with clues that led to a big “I love you” poster in the van. Savannah made me a Mother’s Day party in her room :) First, I was allowed to check out two books from her book collection. Then, we played the “don’t let the monster truck hit you” game…basically, dodge the remote control monster truck and don’t let it hit your feet…and then she made a treasure hunt that led to a sweet note that said “Mommy awas (always) helps me. I love u” and a bookmark with stickers. Finally, they made a joke party where they told me lots of jokes from their joke books. Travis took care of all the dishes and helping the girls with dinner and bedtime. It was a great day!! Tyler and Travis also coordinated and got Alisha and me gift cards to the Soak House in Guntersville. I felt very loved!

May 10th was Neon Day for the letter “N”…

I loved seeing all the pictures of the fun they were having at school.

Mrs. Borys said they ended the day with a glowing dance party :)

After school, we delivered newspapers with Emily and Sarah and their girls.

Drop the newspaper and run! ;)

Bible story before bed :)

Brooklyn had soccer practice on May 11th. I caught her shot in mid air!

One of the girls painted a “Galaxy Queens” picture and brought it that night, so the team took a picture with it after practice. I thought it turned out cute!

I took Abigail to the doctor on May 13th. I am always reminding her “Pull your mask up” because she likes to let it droop beneath her nose (just like a lot of people do…ha). This was her response! ;)

This girl loves to have fun!

On May 14th, Brooklyn’s class wrote letters to the future 2nd graders at Mill Creek next year…

…and celebrated “Read On Day” for the letter “R” by bringing their favorite book from home. Brooklyn took her Last Dogs book.

Brooklyn asked to come with me to Savannah’s soccer practice that evening, and Alison and Mary Jane asked her if she wanted to “help” with the practice. She ended up doing all the stretches, drills, and scrimmage with Savannah and her teammates.

Brooklyn was so proud to be the helper and says she really wants to come back for the last practice of the season too :)

On May 15th, Savannah had her soccer game at 10 AM, and Brooklyn played at 1 PM. Savannah was coughing and a little hoarse today, so I’m not sure she was quite at 100% percent, although she didn’t act like she felt bad. She still played hard and did her best out there today!

I’m pretty sure Savannah scored one goal, and she did a great job chasing down the other team when they had the ball. They were playing Coach Matt’s team (her coach from the fall). I think Savannah’s team won by several goals. She had fun and the kids all enjoyed popsicles after the game. It was pretty warm today!

We had time to come home and eat lunch before Brooklyn’s game. Her team was playing the team that crushed them in the first game of the season. Travis said it went better this time around, but that’s not saying a whole lot. They still scored probably 10 or 15 goals against us, and we didn’t score any.

For the last quarter, the teams swapped 2 players each and that helped even things out a little more. Nobody scored in that quarter. Brooklyn said she still had fun and she played hard at midfielder and striker!

That evening, Alisha and I went to a wedding shower for Jake and Bethany at Joy and Michelle’s house. The table with all the charcuterie was so beautiful!!

It was good to see some of the Grant family that we hadn’t seen in a while. We had a fun time!

May 16th was Mikayla’s graduation party. It was hard to believe she was already about to graduate from high school!!

I was one of the hostesses at the party, and I thought everything went really well. We had a good turnout, Beth did a great job on the slideshow, and hopefully Mikayla and the whole Hester family felt loved. They are so special to us! Mikayla is about 10 years older than Brooklyn, so it’s hard to believe this will be us in another 10 years with Brooklyn graduating high school. Not ready for that at all. The girls loved spending time with Mikayla at the party, and it was nice to catch up with several ladies who I haven’t talked to much recently. It was a wonderful afternoon!

Notes and Quotes from Early May 2021:

  • 5/1/21 – Brooklyn figured out about the tooth fairy today too. She told me, “It just makes sense that if you are Santa and the Easter Bunny, that you would be the tooth fairy too.” I have to say…she wrote the sweetest notes to the tooth fairy, so this one hurts my heart a bit. But it will be okay ;) She has to grow up at some point!
  • 5/6/21 – Savannah told me after school: “Momma, guess what the best thing that happened today at school was! We got to take our desk shields down!!” Brooklyn told me later that her shield got to come down too. What a huge step toward normalcy!! No more plexiglass around their desks. Savannah said it was great because she used to have to scoot her chair around to the outside of her desk to see the smart board, but now she can see just sitting where her chair normally is. She was really happy!
  • 5/13/21 – Abigail was running a fever yesterday and took a 4 hour afternoon nap (just acting like she didn’t feel well all evening too), so I took her to see Dr. Dudley this morning. She weighed in at a whopping 28 pounds…haha. She is small but mighty. I was worried it might be covid since she was also coughing a little bit this morning, but thankfully her strep and covid tests came back negative. Probably just some random virus going around.
  • 5/16/21 – Today was a big day!! It was our first service at church without masks since before the pandemic!! Travis and I have both had both doses of the vaccine. He is fully vaccinated, and I am 2 days away from being 14 days out (fully vaccinated), so we called it good enough. We are not worried about the kids catching it, and at this point, we are ready to just get on with normal life. It’s been a long 14 months. It felt so nice to sit on our old pew, sing without masks, and just talk to people without the masks being in the way. It’s really hard to talk to others in a long conversation with masks on…it’s difficult to hear and for others to hear you. We were some of the last people to still be wearing masks (there are still a few others, but not many!), so Brooklyn was especially ready to not be the only one wearing her mask in bible class. It was a good feeling today! Abigail also participated in her very first bible drill class that afternoon. Uncle Allen gave her a multiple choice question (What did Aaron’s rod turn into?), and she got it right! Travis said he asked her if she wanted to participate, and she said yes. She sat right by Savannah the whole time, and Savannah had her arm around Abigail trying to keep her still and quiet, I think. Such a good big sister!

Thanks for reading!!
