You know those funny All State commercials with the “Mayhem” guy? Stuff is flying through the air, cars are wrecking, things catch on fire, etc. Basically…mayhem! Well, we had our own version of that the other night…
Let me paint the picture for you.
It was Thursday night, and we were getting ready to have a few friends over to watch the Sugar Bowl. I was in the kitchen getting the food ready, and Brooklyn was crawling around in the kitchen. Travis was busy straightening up a few things around the house. Pretty typical.
Travis decided it would be a good idea to take our Christmas wreath down off the front door and hang our Bama wreath in its place. (Yes, we *still* haven’t taken our Christmas decorations down!). So, he goes outside to take the Christmas wreath down real quick. Meanwhile, I’m busy at the stove trying to get the food ready since everyone will be here soon. Travis walks back into the kitchen with the Christmas wreath only to find Brooklyn holding the cat’s water bowl up in the air. She’s dumped all of it out, and her pants and socks are soaked. Water is all over the floor around her. We really can’t take our eyes off of her for more than a minute before something like this happens.
So anyway, Travis sets the wreath down on the floor and moves Brooklyn off to the side. He cleans up the water on the floor but figures out that water has gotten under the bookshelf sitting right next to where the water bowl usually is. The bookshelf holds several pieces of my everyday china, some cookbooks, and a few other random things. Travis takes a piece of china off the top of the bookshelf and then proceeds to slide the bookshelf out where he can wipe up the water that got underneath.
CRASH!!! BANG!!!
He moves the bookshelf just a little bit before a piece of china goes flying off and hits the floor, shattering into a million pieces. (Luckily, Brooklyn isn’t in the line of fire. She’s just sitting in her soaked britches on the floor watching the whole scene unfold). Travis runs to grab the broom and sweeps up the broken china. This takes a few minutes because there are so many small pieces. He gets finished with that and can FINALLY mop up the water that he was trying to get to in the first place.
He starts mopping up the water, looks up, and sees that Brooklyn has something in her mouth. (Not very unusual these days!). He drops the rag, goes over to check it out, and sees that she is eating part of the Christmas wreath that he’d laid on the floor when he found her holding the water bowl. She has completely chewed a glittery red ball off the wreath and has the red ball in her mouth. There is red glitter all over her face and IN her mouth! He fishes the red ball out of her mouth and wipes the glitter off her face.
Giving up on getting the glitter out of her mouth (how do you really do that??), Travis sets Brooklyn down and finishes mopping up the water off the floor. He then carefully slides the bookshelf back into place. Next, he changes Brooklyn’s soggy pants and socks and puts her in some dry clothes. And, at last, he can finally do what he set out to do in the first place: put the Christmas wreath in the garage and hang the Bama wreath up.
Complete chaos!
I’d say this all happened in the span of about 5 minutes. It doesn’t take long for things to get crazy around here…
Luckily, things were under control by the time the doorbell rang a few minutes later, so no one knew what had just been going on.
The funny part is that this is just a typical evening around our house these days. Now, here’s the real question…
How does something this cute cause that much mayhem???

I remember those days! And we still have them, just in different ways! If no one gets hurt then those times can make for some really funny stories. So just laugh…and be sure you write it down to share with B when she gets older! Hang in there!
Oh yes, we have lots of stories already! I told Travis I was putting that one in the blog so we don’t forget it. Priceless! :)
“I didn’t do it, Mommy!” Hilarious!!! Someone is “paying for their raising.” Not sure if it’s you or Travis!!
I’m sure it’s not me! ;)
