Savannah turned 10 years old a little over a month ago–our second daughter is now in double digits. It’s hard to believe!

Savannah is 55 inches tall (60th percentile) and weighs 66.1 lbs (30th percentile). She has grown 2 inches and almost 6 pounds since last year. She is wearing size 10/12 clothes and around a size 5 (kids) in shoes. She has lost a bunch of teeth in the last year–so many that I’ve lost count. Two of the teeth that have come out are her baby lateral teeth with no permanent teeth behind them. I wondered if she would have gaps there until she gets braces, but her permanent canines are actually moving into those empty spaces. She will definitely need braces at some point, but we’ll have to consult with her orthodontist at her next visit to see when that will be. Another big change since last year is that she officially has glasses now! She doesn’t wear them all the time, but she likes wearing them for seeing things far away and watching TV. She looks super cute wearing them! Savannah is still wearing her hair long with no signs of wanting to cut it short.

Savannah continues to be a good eater, although she is selective about certain things–like not wanting different foods to touch. She also likes to pick tomatoes out of foods if she sees them ;) For breakfast, she will eat cereal or toast, but loves the special mornings when we have waffles or pancakes. During the school year, she almost always brings her lunch unless it’s “breakfast for lunch” day. PB&J or grilled cheese are her favorite sandwiches. Her favorite fruits are cantaloupe and raspberries, and her favorite vegetables are okra and carrots. She eats almost everything I cook for dinner, but especially likes vegetable soup and BBQ meatballs.
None of the girls sleep especially late, but Savannah is usually the latest sleeper of the three of them. She goes to bed around 8 or 8:30, or at least that’s the goal. She likes to read before bed, and sometimes she’ll stay in her room reading in the morning after she first wakes up. She loves summertime when she doesn’t have to get up so early!

Savannah just finished 4th grade, and it was another good year of school. She had mostly the same team of teachers that Brooklyn had in 4th grade, and her homeroom teacher was Mrs. Davidson. Savannah did very well in all of her classes. She sometimes needed help with math homework depending on the night, but did well on the tests in all of her classes. She was looking forward to the animal unit in science and was bummed when they didn’t get to do it this year. Brooklyn still has her fiddler crab from 4th grade, so Savannah was hoping to adopt a new pet too :) The beginning of the year started out a little rough in terms of friendships, but she eventually became good friends with Lillian (who she knew from 2nd grade) and Rose. There was one boy in her class who had a crush on her for most of the year, and the feeling wasn’t mutual ;) Savannah also tested into the gifted program this year and began going to GE class once a week starting in January. Other than not having a good friend in her GE class, she enjoyed the activities and challenges it brought. At the end of the year, her homeroom voted on awards for the class, and I was so proud that Savannah received the “Shining Example” award. She said one of the girls in the class said that Savannah deserved it because she “always does the right thing.” That makes me prouder than anything!

As far as her interests, Savannah continues to love soccer and sports in general. She played up on Brooklyn’s soccer team this spring, and it was a really great experience to have them play together for the first time. She also enjoys basketball, four square, swimming, tag, frisbee…just being active in general. She is pretty competitive and sometimes gets too focused on the the results instead of just enjoying the game, but we are working on that ;) Some of her other interests include board games (especially “thinking games”/puzzles), reading, Star Wars, polar bears, Perler beads, making things with her 3D pen, playing school with Abigail, and writing articles for the neighborhood newspaper.

Other things I want to remember about Savannah at age 10: She is very inquisitive and has a deep desire to understand how and why things work. She has gotten into LEGOs in the last year and enjoys them much more than Brooklyn or Abigail at this point. She loves to drum with her hands (even though she’s never had any kind of lessons), so I’m wondering if she’ll want to try band in middle school. Savannah has a great memory and remembers all kinds of things that I have long forgotten ;) She continues to be very caring and empathetic toward others but pretty hard on herself. We have worked with her a lot in the last year on building self confidence and not worrying as much, and we are proud of the growth she’s made! We are all a work in progress in some of these areas, even as adults :)

Savannah, we can’t believe you are about to enter your last year of elementary school! We love you and are so proud of you. Keep shining bright!
